Triple Suicide Bombings Kill 23, Injure 108 in Maiduguri

At least 23 people were killed and 108 others injured on Sunday night when suspected suicide bombers detonated improvised explosive devices at three separate locations in Maiduguri, the Borno State Police Command has confirmed.

The near-simultaneous explosions struck at approximately 7:24 p.m., targeting the Monday Market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), and the Post Office Flyover area — three of the city’s busiest public spaces.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that the incidents were carried out by suspected suicide bombers,” the Command said in a press release signed by its spokesperson.

Security forces, including Police Tactical Units, the military, and other joint operatives, were swiftly deployed to the affected areas. The Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, Base 13 Maiduguri, conducted sweep operations across all three scenes to rule out additional threats.

Commissioner of Police CP Naziru Abdulmajid visited the sites to personally assess the situation and condole with victims and their families.

“The Command is unwavering in its commitment to safeguarding lives and property,” he said, adding that normalcy had been fully restored in the affected areas.

Victims were evacuated by emergency responders from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to hospitals, where they are currently receiving treatment.

Sunday’s attack is among the deadliest to hit Maiduguri in recent months, signifying the persistent threat posed by Boko Haram and its splinter factions to the Borno State capital despite years of counterinsurgency operations.

The Command said investigations are ongoing and urged residents to remain calm and report any suspicious movements or objects to the nearest security agency.
