Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State and national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has held separate meetings with Rauf Aregbesola, national secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Kano ADC leaders in Abuja.
The meetings have fueled speculation about Kwankwaso’s next political move, with reports suggesting he may be considering a defection to the ADC as part of a broader realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kwankwaso, who hosted Aregbesola at his Abuja residence, described him as “a dear friend” and expressed delight at the visit. On the same day, his media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, confirmed that the NNPP leader also received a delegation of Kano ADC leaders led by Hon. Musa Shuaibu Ungogo, the party’s state chairman, alongside Balarabe Rufai, ADC’s national youth leader.
Rufai later wrote on X that the meeting went beyond courtesy, noting:
“This was not a courtesy visit or just about defection. We sat down to talk about the future, direction, and what comes next. Something is taking shape.”
The discussions come amid growing speculation of a possible alliance between Kwankwaso and Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate. The idea gained momentum during the annual Kwankwasiyya Eid festival in Kano, where supporters repeatedly chanted Obi’s name. Both Kwankwaso and Obi acknowledged the crowd and delivered brief remarks, further stoking talk of a joint 2027 presidential ticket.
With these meetings, Kwankwaso appears to be positioning himself at the center of ongoing negotiations that could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the next general election.
