The Federal High Court sitting in Maiduguri has awarded ₦2 million in damages to Umar Sherrif after declaring that his detention for over six months by the Nigerian Army violated his fundamental human rights.
The disclosure was made by the victim’s counsel, Hamza Nuhu Dantani, who said the court found that Sherrif was unlawfully arrested, detained, and subjected to inhumane treatment without due process.
According to Dantani, soldiers allegedly arrested Sherrif at his residence during a night operation in December 2025 over allegations of links to Boko Haram. He said the security operatives detained him in an underground cell for more than six months and publicised his arrest on social media and in the media as a suspected Boko Haram collaborator.
The lawyer maintained that his client, a school teacher, had no connection to the allegations and that the military later confirmed he was not linked to the insurgent group before releasing him.
Dantani said he petitioned senior military authorities, including the Chief of Defence Staff, and subsequently instituted a fundamental rights enforcement suit before the Federal High Court in Maiduguri, challenging the detention.
He stated that the court ruled in favour of Sherrif, declaring the detention unlawful and ordering the Nigerian Army to pay ₦2 million as compensation for the violation of his rights.
The lawyer urged security agencies to conduct thorough investigations before making arrests and to avoid subjecting suspects to media trials, warning that innocent persons could suffer irreparable harm through wrongful detention and public stigmatisation.
The Nigerian Army has not publicly responded to the claims at the time of filing this report.
