A civil society group, the Statecraft Foundation for Development Outcome and Inclusion, staged a march in Abuja on Tuesday to press for greater accountability in local governance.
The procession, which began at the Federal Ministry of Finance and ended at the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), was aimed at delivering a “Charter of Citizens’ Demands” — a document reflecting concerns from residents across the six Area Councils of the FCT.
Leading the march, Mr. Emmanuel Obiabo said the group had notified the Mandate Secretary for Area Council Services, Honourable Lawrence Beatruce Garki, of their visit. However, upon arrival, they were denied access. “We followed all the procedures. We came peacefully. Yet when we got here, we were told he was not around and that security had no record of our visit,” Obiabo said.
The Foundation highlighted worsening conditions in AMAC, Bwari, Kuje, and Gwagwalada, citing abandoned projects and poor service delivery.
For the marchers, the initiative represents more than policy advocacy. “Area Councils are the closest government to the people. If they fail, the people suffer first,” Obiabo said.
Although unable to submit the document directly, the group pledged to continue engaging the FCTA and political leaders. Their message, they stressed, is that accountability, transparency, and good governance are obligations — not optional gestures.
