A language forgotten. A traditional dress abandoned. A family recipe no longer prepared. A song that nobody remembers. These may look like small losses, but together, they tell a bigger story—the slow fading of a people’s identity.
Today, the world is only a scroll away. Young people can discover new music, fashion, food and lifestyles from across the globe within seconds. Technology has connected us in remarkable ways, but it has also raised an important question: as we embrace the modern world, are we slowly forgetting where we come from?
Culture is more than what we display during festivals. It lives in the language we speak, the food we prepare, the clothes we wear, the music we listen to, the stories told by elders and the values passed from one generation to another.
For Borno, this cultural inheritance stretches back centuries.
Speaking with Dr. Hassan Zanna, the Zanna Boguma of Borno, says the history of Borno spans more than 1,600 years. He traces its history to the Saifawa dynasty and explains how its capital moved from Njimi to Ngazargamu and later to other centres, eventually leading to Kukawa and the emergence of the Al-Kanemi dynasty.
He explains that the Kanem-Borno Empire was not made up of one ethnic group alone. Different communities formed part of its history, while present-day Borno remains culturally diverse, with the Kanuri as the majority alongside communities including the Shuwa,Babur Bura, Marghi, Kanakuru, Hausa and Fulani, among others.
Within the Borno Emirate, he identifies the Shehu of Borno as the spiritual and temporal leader and the head of the people of Borno. He also describes the Shehu as an embodiment of Borno’s culture and tradition.
For Dr. Zanna, this long history and traditional leadership are closely connected to the rich cultural heritage that has been passed from one generation to another.
He pointed to traditions surrounding marriage, traditional cuisine, naming ceremonies, child upbringing and religious learning. In marriage ceremonies, he mentions practices such as Ra,aki sent to the bride’s family by the groom’s family, as well as wushe,wushe, klatul and Kalawa,
Naming ceremonies also have their own practices, including jiji and Tada,a lalewo, while circumcision rites, known in Kanuri as Kaja, form another part of traditional life.
He also recalls the traditional system of Qur’anic learning, where children were sent to Qur’anic teachers to recite and memorise the Qur’an, with celebrations following completion.
“These are beautiful traditions,” he says.
But some of those traditions are gradually disappearing.
Dr. Zanna says practices such as Kalawa,jiji and Tada,a lalewo are fading, while tribal marks and aspects of the traditional communal spirit of the Kanuri people have also declined.
He recalls Kanuri people as traditionally hospitable and strongly connected to their communities. However, he says population growth and the arrival of people from different cultural backgrounds have affected the culture and traditions of Borno.
Modernisation and interaction between cultures, he added, have also changed the way young people relate to traditions.
He says many young people have forgotten century-old cultures and traditions. Even some educated and modernised parents, he notes, have forgotten traditions that were once passed down through families.
“There are a lot of traditions and cultural rites in marriages,” he explains. “There are a lot of traditions and cultural rites in child upbringing.”
Some of these, he says, are now becoming memories.
He also mentions Larawangyi, a practice observed during the last Wednesday of Safar, which he says is fading in some places.

Dr. Zanna does not believe abandoning these traditions improves the lives of young people.
He argues that the 21st century and the age of technology have brought negative influences, with some young people becoming “copycats”—copying what they see from other cultures while forgetting what their forefathers taught them.
He also identified cultural interaction as one of the reasons traditional practices are declining, noting the growing influence of other cultural practices within Borno society.`
For him, losing culture means losing part of what a community has to offer the world.
“Your culture, your tradition is what you are,” he says.
The voices of young people
Yet the young people interviewed for this article say they have not completely abandoned their culture.
Hajjara Abubakar Isa, a Mass Communication student at the University of Maiduguri, says her culture is important because it is part of who she is and helps her understand where she comes from.
She still respects elders, participates in family and cultural events and speaks her native language, especially with her family.
However, she admited that there are traditions she does not know much about because some are no longer practised as they were in the past.
Halima, a Microbiology student, describes culture as giving her a “sense of identity and belonging.” Idris Abba Zanna, a university student, also says culture is an important part of his identity and continues to practise respect for elders, family traditions and cultural celebrations.
Their responses suggest that young people may still value their culture, even as the way they experience it changes.
Can technology save what it is helping to change?
Interestingly, social media is not viewed only as a threat.
Hajjara says social media has helped her discover traditional clothing, food, music and cultural events. She believes young people can use TikTok, Instagram and other platforms to showcase their culture.
Idris similarly believes young people can share cultural stories, language, food, music and traditions online.
This means the technology that exposes young people to other cultures can also become a tool for preserving their own.
A traditional recipe can be recorded. An elder’s story can be filmed. A language can be taught through short videos. Traditional clothing and ceremonies can be documented for future generations.
But Dr. Zanna believes preservation must begin within the family.
“Family is the first school of any child,” he says.
Young people, he advises, should spend time with older generations, ask questions and learn about their culture, traditions and ways of life.
He wants young people to understand who they are and eventually pass what they learn to their own children.
A Message to Young People
Dr. Hassan Zanna’s message to young Nigerians is clear: be people of good character, value the lessons of your parents and forefathers, protect your language and cherish your culture.
He acknowledges that change can benefit society, but warns that some changes can also destroy its core values. He therefore urges young people to embrace the modern world without allowing other cultures to erase their own.
“Your culture, your tradition is what you are,” he says, calling on young people to learn, appreciate and pass their heritage on to the next generation.
