The Retirement of a Mentor
April 25, 2026, marks more than a formal retirement—it marks the close of an era defined by scholarship, mentorship, and enduring intellectual influence. On this day, Professor Abdallah Uba Adamu, a distinguished double Professor of Science Education and Communication and Cultural Studies, retires from active service at Bayero University Kano.
It is difficult to compress decades of impact into words. How does one adequately describe a man whose career has shaped not only academic discourse but also the lives and trajectories of countless students and professionals? His legacy goes far beyond classrooms and publications—it is deeply rooted in people.
Throughout his career, Professor Adamu demonstrated an uncommon blend of intellectual depth, administrative excellence, and genuine commitment to nurturing others. His contributions to the Department of Information and Media Studies at Bayero University Kano and his influential role at the National Open University of Nigeria stand as enduring testaments to a life devoted to advancing knowledge and building institutions.
What sets him apart, however, is not just what he taught, but how he transformed perspectives.
He opened doors many did not even know existed, exposing his mentees to global academic spaces across Germany, Switzerland, the United States, the United Kingdom, Cameroon, South Africa, and Kenya. These opportunities did more than broaden academic horizons—they redefined confidence, sharpened intellectual identity, and prepared a generation not merely to participate, but to lead.
His mentorship extended widely within the department, accommodating and guiding scholars such as Muhammad Ibrahim Danja, Hassan Alhaji Ya’u, Ruqayyah Yusuf Aliyu, Saminu Umar, Mukhtar Magaji, Aliyu Isah Agaie, Musa Adamu Labaran, Ummi Muhammad Hassan, among many others. To his students—undergraduate and postgraduate alike—he was far more than a supervisor. He was a guide, a father figure, and a steady source of inspiration who instilled purpose, discipline, curiosity, and integrity.
Retirement, in his case, is clearly not an endpoint. His ongoing engagements—ranging from seminars on emerging areas like Artificial Intelligence to continuous research and mentorship—signal a transition into an even broader phase of influence. The academic community, both within Nigeria and globally, still has much to gain from his insight and experience.
On this milestone, prayers and goodwill accompany him:
May Allah (SWT) grant him good health and sustained strength.
May his wisdom continue to grow, and his contributions multiply.
Professor Nura Ibrahim, Head of Department of Information and Media Studies
