The recent reemergence of Boko Haram after nearly two years of silence is troubling. Their ability to launch an attack on a military base, resulting in the deaths, injuries, and disarmament of soldiers, signals that they are ready to resume their aggressive actions as seen in previous years. President Tinubu must be vigilant in response to these atrocities and take urgent measures, as the government’s primary responsibility is to ensure the safety of its citizens.
Reflecting on the history of the region, despite the transformative agenda of former President Goodluck Jonathan Ebele, which sought to maintain law and order, restore peace, and improve agriculture, power, education, and healthcare systems in northern Nigeria, he ultimately lost the 2015 general elections. This defeat was largely attributed to the devastating attacks by Boko Haram, particularly in the states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa.
Insecurity in northern Nigeria played a significant role in Jonathan’s electoral loss, as many in the region accused him of complicity in the Boko Haram insurgency. In reality, he had no prior knowledge of the situation’s escalation and was actively looking for ways to end the violence. Historically, the people of northern Nigeria have not tolerated hardship or insecurity, no matter the development initiatives underway in their communities.
During Jonathan’s administration, various measures were implemented to reduce street begging, decrease the number of out-of-school children, and establish nine universities across northern Nigeria. Despite these efforts, many in the north harbored resentment towards him, even associating him with Boko Haram.
With the insurgency’s resurgence, resulting in deadly attacks across Borno and parts of Yobe, immediate and decisive action is essential to address this menace. The recent attacks have led to the loss of hundreds of lives, targeted businesses, and raided villages, posing a significant threat to the safety of innocent Nigerians. Furthermore, this ongoing violence jeopardizes President Tinubu’s position and his chances for reelection.
Therefore, President Tinubu must take swift and effective action to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control, similar to what occurred in 2015. If not, northerners are likely to turn against him and actively seek to vote him out of office, as they cannot endure or tolerate insecurity. Additionally, the current issues of banditry in the Northwest and kidnapping in North Central further threaten the stability of northern Nigeria. If these problems continue, President Tinubu could ultimately lose his seat in the upcoming elections, regardless of his level of preparedness.
