Billiri, Gombe State — Tragedy struck in Billiri Local Government Area of Gombe State on Monday as a trailer truck transporting grains lost control and rammed into a crowd of Easter celebrants, leaving five people dead and eight others injured.
The Gombe State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement, revealing that the truck, en route from Adamawa to Gombe, reportedly suffered brake failure while approaching a religious procession in the town.
In the aftermath, aggrieved youths set the truck ablaze, vandalized shops, and stormed the Billiri Divisional Police Headquarters, pelting officers with stones and dangerous objects. Several police personnel, including the Divisional Police Officer, sustained injuries before order was eventually restored.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Yahaya, extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He further assured that security has been beefed up in the area and that a full investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident.
Residents have been urged to remain calm, shun violence, and report any suspicious activity to security agencies.
