Social media has recently been dominated by discourse regarding the interview between Maishanu and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. A section of commentators has accused her of unprofessionalism, citing her sustained, intense eye contact with the National Leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party. Separately, a group of journalists has also criticized the anchor for what they deem unprofessional conduct.
As an early-career journalist and an ardent follower of global news, from local to international coverage, including interviews and analyses, I have yet to identify any lapse in professionalism exhibited by Maishanu during that exchange.
Maintaining direct eye contact remains one of the most effective techniques of active listening: immersing oneself in another’s perspective, attending to every detail, and seeking clarity in ambiguous areas. This is not only professional but also establishes a necessary connection between interviewer and interviewee. Moreover, this was a professional interview conducted by a leading media organization, not a casual dialogue between mentor and mentee or a politician and a constituent, a distinction many seem to overlook.
Regarding the so-called “frowning” expression: such reactions occur unconsciously, particularly when one is deeply engaged in listening or analytical thought. Dear reader, this has likely happened to you on numerous occasions, though often without a camera present to capture the moment.
We must also recognize that journalism is not mere ‘data boying’. It is a profession that brings information closer to the people, enabling informed decisions and holding government to account. Journalism is not lobbying, sycophancy, or bootlicking. It is a profession rooted in transforming lives through the power of information. Anyone who understands this would not question Maishanu’s conduct especially as she committed no professional breach.
