The senate of Bayero University Kano ( BUK) has approved and recommended to the governing council the establishment of a Centre for Journalism and New Media studies. The first University-base centre of it’s kind in Nigeria.
The decision taking at 429th Meeting of the Senate on wednesday, 29th October, 2025 marks a major step in the university’s efforts towards advance media education and response to the fast changing communication landscape.
The proposed Centre which has already secured funding for it’s take off, will focus on Postgraduate programs, practical training, research and collaboration with industry stakeholders. It aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice while preparing journalist and media scholars for the digital age.
According to the senate resolution, the centre recognises the evolving nature global media and the need for research in journalism. New technologies and digital storytelling. When operational, it’s expected BUK as a national leader in media education and innovation.
The university describe the move as a forward looking initiative that aligns with it’s strategic vision of strategic planning in promoting research, innovation and human capital development.
Journalism education in Nigeria dates back to early post independence period, with BUK emerging the earliest university to institutionalised mass communication studies, over the years the university has produced many leading journalist academics and professionals.
The idea for the new Centre was conceptualise under the leadership of Umaru U. Pate a foremost media scholar and reform advocate whose vision has guided BUK in pioneering role in advancing journalism and communication research.
