Prominent political figures, Atiku Abubakar and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have strongly denounced the recent killing of 16 travelers from Northern Nigeria in Uromi, Edo State. They have called for an extensive investigation and swift prosecution of those responsible.
The victims, reportedly hunters of Hausa origin, were traveling from Port Harcourt to Kano for the Sallah festivities when they were attacked by a mob and falsely accused of being kidnappers.
Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last general election, expressed deep grief over the killings.
“I am heartbroken by the tragic news of the senseless killing of hunters in Edo State. My thoughts and prayers are with their families and loved ones,” he wrote on his Facebook page.
He emphasized the need for a fair and transparent investigation, stressing that justice must not only be served but must also be seen to be served to restore public trust in the security system.
“The protection of innocent lives should be the utmost priority. Authorities must act decisively to prevent such incidents of mob violence from happening again. Justice must prevail,” Atiku stated.
Similarly, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, presidential flagbearer of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the last general election, condemned the gruesome act, describing it as inhumane and unacceptable.
Expressing his outrage in a Facebook post, Kwankwaso said: “The brutal killing of 16 travelers from Northern Nigeria in Edo State is a shocking and tragic reminder of the dangers of jungle justice. Every Nigerian has the right to travel freely without fear of harassment or violence.”
He called for an immediate and comprehensive investigation to bring the perpetrators to book and ensure justice for the victims.
The tragic incident, which occurred on March 27, 2025, in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi, has sparked national outrage, with many calling for urgent measures to curb rising cases of mob violence across the country.
