The Non-Ignorable Game-Changer

By Mubarak Shuaybu Shelleng

The history of Nigerian politics would be incomplete without acknowledging the significant contributions of our northern leaders: Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardaunan Sokoto, Tafawa Balewa, Mallam Aminu Kano, Shehu Shagari, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Muhammadu Buhari, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Sule Lamido, Atiku Abubakar, and currently, Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai, among others. While it is certainly within one’s right to criticise these figures for various reasons as is a customary part of political discourse the individuals mentioned above have made substantial contributions to ensuring that the interests of the north are addressed, despite their imperfections.

Label him as self-centred, arrogant, or whatever name your narrow perspective may conjure, but what Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai is currently doing represents an ultimate sacrifice that any politician could make to save the north from its current state of apparent marginalisation.

I believe that what Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai is doing may very well echo the parting words of the great leaders who have fought for our people and hold them in their hearts. For those well-versed in the Nigerian political landscape, it is clear that El-Rufai has no personal agenda or vendetta; he is a man who has served two terms as the governor of Kaduna State and has been a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, among other notable political and intellectual roles. There is little he stands to lose by missing out on the ministerial positions, unlike others, such as Festus Keyamo, the current Minister of Aviation, who struggled to defend himself on national television.

Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai is a true democrat and a dedicated Northerner, distinguished by his unmatched political and intellectual prowess in our current political scene. He has chosen to single-handedly advocate for what an ideal democracy looks like—a strong and formidable opposition that holds the government accountable.

What El-Rufai and other distinguished politicians are working to create is a robust political coalition that urges the current government to stay alert and respond swiftly to the considerable missteps that threaten to undermine the unity and diversity that make our country great.

While those forming this coalition may have their flaws, their cause is undoubtedly worthy—it embodies the ideals of democracy.

Critics may insult and question Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai, but one cannot deny his courage, focus, and, most importantly, his outspoken nature. He was a proud son of his father and a proud representative of the north, carrying the region’s interests into every corner of society, relying on our collective efforts and responsibilities.

Only a poverty of knowledge and a lack of understanding could lead one to challenge Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai and his relentless efforts.

Our great-grandchildren will undoubtedly remember his name!
