Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party has been re-elected Governor of Osun State, defeating his closest challenger, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, by 66,252 votes in Saturday’s governorship election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Adeleke the winner on Sunday after the completion of collation of results from all 30 Local Government Areas of the state.
Adeleke polled 511,067 votes, while Oyebamiji secured 444,815 votes.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Najeem Salaam, finished third with 17,180 votes.
The result gives Adeleke a second term in office and marks another significant electoral victory for the governor, who contested the election under the Accord Party after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The final declaration followed hours of collation at the INEC state collation centre in Osogbo. Reports from the collation showed that Adeleke won 19 of the state’s 30 LGAs, while Oyebamiji secured 11.
Adeleke takes 19 LGAs
The incumbent governor recorded victories across several parts of the state, including Osogbo, Ede North, Ede South, Ife East, Ife Central, Iwo, Oriade and Egbedore, among other local government areas.
Oyebamiji, the APC candidate, won Ilesa East, Boripe, Irepodun, Obokun, Irewole, Atakumosa West, Atakumosa East, Isokan, Ola-Oluwa, Ife South and Olorunda.
The geographical spread of the results demonstrated the competitiveness of the election, with the two leading candidates sharing victories across Osun’s three senatorial districts.
Although the APC candidate won fewer LGAs, his strong performance in several councils helped him close the statewide gap considerably.
A closely watched political contest
The election was one of the most closely watched off-cycle governorship contests in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Osun has a history of competitive governorship elections. In the 2022 election, Adeleke, then the PDP candidate, defeated the incumbent APC governor, Gboyega Oyetola, with 403,371 votes against Oyetola’s 375,027.
Four years later, Adeleke faced a different political configuration, contesting under the Accord Party against Oyebamiji of the APC.
The election therefore carried significance beyond the immediate battle for the Osun Government House, particularly as political parties and observers increasingly view off-cycle elections as indicators of voter sentiment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
2.3 million registered voters
The election was conducted across 30 LGAs, 332 wards and 3,763 polling units.
Available pre-election figures put the number of registered voters in the state at approximately 2.34 million, with about 1.91 million Permanent Voter Cards collected.
Fifteen political parties fielded candidates for the election, although the contest was largely dominated by Adeleke and Oyebamiji.
The ADC’s Najeem Salaam emerged as the strongest third force, but his 17,180 votes remained significantly below the totals recorded by the two leading candidates.
Voting largely peaceful, but challenges reported
Voting across the state was generally reported to have been peaceful and orderly, with strong voter participation observed in several communities.
Domestic observers reported orderly voting and significant voter turnout in parts of Ede and other locations.
However, the election was not without challenges.
Election-monitoring reports identified late arrival of electoral officials, technical difficulties involving the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), alleged vote-buying and isolated incidents of disruption at some polling locations.
The reported challenges did not prevent INEC from completing the collation and declaring a winner.
Security was also a major consideration before and during the poll. Authorities deployed substantial security personnel across the state and restricted movement in an effort to prevent electoral violence and other disruptions.
Electronic transmission and collation
The election also provided another test of Nigeria’s electronic results-transmission process.
INEC uploaded polling-unit results to its Result Viewing (IReV) portal during and after voting. By late Saturday, thousands of polling-unit results had been uploaded, although the process continued as physical results were collated through the established electoral hierarchy.
The completion of the LGA-level collation paved the way for the final declaration at the state collation centre in Osogbo.
Adeleke’s victory and what it means
Adeleke’s victory represents a consolidation of his political position in Osun State and secures another four years in the Government House.
His ability to win 19 of the 30 LGAs, while also crossing the 500,000-vote threshold, gives the result a clear numerical advantage over the APC candidate.
For the APC, however, Oyebamiji’s 444,815 votes show that the party maintained substantial electoral strength across the state.
The relatively narrow difference between the two leading candidates in relation to their overall vote totals means that the APC remains a significant political force in Osun despite losing the governorship.
The outcome is also likely to attract national political attention as parties position themselves for the 2027 elections.

The Osun election has therefore ended with a clear winner, but its wider political implications are likely to extend well beyond the state.
