A 20-year-old young man has died after he was reportedly run over by a truck driver attempting to evade officials of the Borno State Traffic Management Agency (BOTMA) in Maiduguri.-Kano Road, in Borno State.
According to eyewitnesses, the truck was allegedly picking up passengers at an unauthorized location when BOTMA officials approached to enforce traffic regulations.
An eyewitness, Mustapha Sale, said the driver attempted to flee as officials moved to apprehend the vehicle.
“The truck was loading passengers, and when the BOTMA officials came to arrest the vehicle for violating traffic rules, the driver attempted to escape and ran over a young man identified as Abba,” he said.
The victim sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead immediately.
Another source said the deceased had recently lost his mother and was reportedly living with a mental health condition.
Following the incident, angry residents reportedly blamed BOTMA officials and attacked them, forcing the officials to flee the scene.
The Nigeria Police Force has since taken over the case and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
