Recent developments in Gombe have exposed deep political irregularities. Records show that former Minister of Communication, Professor Isa Ali Pantami, participated in sessions that formed a coalition of political parties under the African Democratic Congress (ADC). This was confirmed by Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai in an interview, noting Pantami’s involvement with the late President Muhammadu Buhari’s bloc that opposed President Bola Tinubu’s government. Other figures in this circle included former Chief Justice Abubakar Malami, Rauf Aregbesola, and Rotimi Amaechi.
Many stakeholders in Gombe believed Pantami was aligning with the ADC until he appeared at the APC secretariat to update his membership. This move raised suspicion, especially given the struggles and accusations faced by ADC members such as El-Rufai and Malami.
Pantami’s ministerial tenure undeniably benefited Gombe, creating employment opportunities for youths and earning him popularity. These efforts positioned him as a potential governorship aspirant, regardless of party affiliation. However, his failure to strengthen party structures in Gombe has fueled distrust. APC stalwarts perceive him as working for the opposition, while Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s preferred aspirant, Dr. Jamilu Gwamna, continues to fund and support the party.
Pantami’s approach appears doomed, as no major politician in Gombe backs his governorship ambition despite his capacity to deliver. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu whom Pantami said has addressed him as “Fati Leader” in a Trust TV interview remains firmly in control of party affairs and is aligned with Governor Yahaya, not Pantami.
Though a skilled public speaker, Pantami’s frequent media appearances only highlight his political naivety. The wisest course for him would be to withdraw his ambition and restrategize for the next election. The APC’s adoption of direct and indirect primaries has largely served to entrench self-interest within the party, leaving little room for outsiders like Pantami to maneuver.
