The Zenith of the Girl Child and Women Initiative Support (ZEGCAWIS), in partnership with IPAS Nigeria Health Foundation, has launched a rapid response project in Magumeri Local Government Area of Borno State to tackle school-related gender-based violence and menstrual health challenges.
The project, introduced during an inception meeting in Magumeri, will establish school-based clubs and encourage community participation to address gender-based violence, menstrual hygiene management, and improve retention of adolescent girls in schools.
UNESCO (2022) reports that menstrual poverty causes girls to miss three to five school days monthly, amounting to 20 percent of the academic year. The initiative aims to reduce this barrier while empowering girls and parents to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to sexual exploitation and abuse.
During the visit, the ZEGCAWIS team met with the Executive Chairman of Magumeri LGA, Professor Ali Yaumi, and the local government education secretary. The meeting was attended by traditional and religious leaders, teachers, police representatives, and other stakeholders.
Magumeri’s leadership was commended for its progress in rebuilding the community after conflict, with skilled professionals heading key departments such as education and health. The posting of the primary health care coordinator, who previously served in Kaga, was highlighted as an example of continuity and expertise driving development.
The project underscores Magumeri’s resilience and commitment to progress, with strategic leadership and community collaboration seen as central to its success.
